Improved understanding of fuel moisture differentials for better burn outcomes

The ACT Parks and Conservation Service has developed a fuel moisture collection program to mitigate the risk associated with the reliance on moisture differentials Detailed knowledge of fuel moisture content across fuel classes and strata has opened up burning opportunities that were previously overlooked when decisions were based solely on weather.

Specifically, collecting 100hr dead fuel moisture data has provided a better understanding of the impact of recent rainfall. The data has also provided burn planners greater confidence in implementing prescribed burns to ensure appropriate levels of fuel consumption while integrating ecological considerations.
