Flood community safety announcement focus group

Researchers at Macquarie University are looking for community members to take part in an online focus group on flood risk communication.

The focus groups are part of a research project to develop nationally consistent flood community safety announcements. The online focus groups will be 60-90 minutes long and will be running from 15-25 June, with a number of date and time options. There are limited places available and those selected to take part will be provided with a $75 Woolworths e-gift voucher.

If interested please contact Dr Mel Taylor for more details at floodriskcommunication@mq.edu.au.

Background to the project:

In 2020, the AFAC SES Community Safety Group (CSG) and AFAC Community Engagement Technical Group agreed to collaborate and develop nationally consistent flood messages.

There is a need for nationally agreed public messaging in relation to floods for use in ABC emergency broadcasting, and an opportunity exists to base these nationally consistent messages on the research findings from the Bushfire and Natural Hazards CRC Flood Risk Communication research project.

This project brings together AFAC SES CSG member with researchers to develop evidence-based nationally consistent flood messages that can be used as community safety announcements by ABC Emergency Broadcasting.
