Location

The University of Sydney, Camperdown NSW – Building F23 Administration Building

Join us for Australia’s first National Forum on Disability Inclusive Disaster Risk Reduction (DIDRR), hosted by the Centre for Disability Research and Policy at the University of Sydney.

The Forum is a free, by invitation event to gather information from key stakeholders about how to operationalise a multi sector, collaborative framework for DIDRR.

At this Forum, we will:

  • Share the Leave Nobody Behind project research findings.
  • Facilitate discussions about how to translate these research findings into inclusive policy, inclusive information, and inclusive practice.
  • Gather input towards the development and operationalisation of a framework for cross-sector collaborative action on DIDRR that will be delivered later in 2023.

The Forum will present research findings from the Leave Nobody Behind (LNB) project’s interdisciplinary research team and their partners. Input from stakeholders attending the Forum will be a key component of the event.

During the Forum participants including people with disability, carers, service providers, emergency services representatives, and those working in policy development will workshop the framework using action orientated DIDRR knowledge and practices, as well as emerging research from the LNB project.

The University of Sydney is proudly partnering with the NSW Government and the Australian Institute for Disaster Resilience (AIDR) to deliver this event.

About the Leave Nobody Behind project

For the past 18-months, the Leave Nobody Behind (LNB) project led by A/Prof. Michelle Villeneuve, has been delivering multi-stakeholder workshops across local governments, designed to build cross-sector community capacity to ensure that nobody is left behind when disasters strike. These workshops build upon five years of participatory action research involving co-production of person-centred and capability-focused approaches to disaster risk reduction with multiple stakeholders from the community, disability, emergency and government sectors.

The latest research includes national surveys on the emergency preparedness, capabilities and support needs of people with disability, as well as carers, and service providers from the community, health, and disability services sectors; evaluation of the interdisciplinary Person-Centred Emergency Preparedness national training program; and field research to develop disability inclusive emergency planning with local governments and their interagency partners.

The LNB project is developing a framework for cross-sector collaborative action on DIDRR, supported and enabled by co-produced tools that everyone can use. This scalable framework will have the potential for broad impact across Australian communities so that nobody is left behind when disasters strike.
