Sharing Connection

'Sharing Connection' by Taungurung artist, Maddi Moser

Aboriginal artwork commissioned by AIDR in 2024

About 'Sharing Connection'

AIDR invites you to view and enjoy “Sharing Connection” as a visual ‘Acknowledgement of Country’ that pays our ongoing respect to Indigenous knowledge and wisdom, and honours Aboriginal people and cultures across this vast land.

AIDR was honoured to work with Taungurung artist, Maddi Moser, who created this artwork to represent AIDR’s development and curation of knowledge about disaster risk reduction, resilience and the importance of connection with Country and each other.

This artwork represents connection through all living things. It depicts the sharing of knowledge and the process of learning. Circles are continuous and have no beginning or end, reflecting the process of the sharing of stories, wisdom and learning. The patterns highlight wisdom and the flow of teaching, learning and sharing knowledge and skills. It reminds us that we are connected through the past and into the present.

AIDR values Indigenous knowledge

AIDR recognises the importance of Indigenous knowledge among the many knowledges that contribute to reducing disaster risk and strengthening resilience.

For many thousands of years, Aboriginal communities have developed deep, place-based understandings of their environments, including holistic and sophisticated approaches to managing land, mitigating natural hazards, and adapting to changing conditions. These traditional practices are rooted in cultural wisdom and lived experience that build deep and sustainable connections with communities and land. Embracing this knowledge enhances understanding about disaster risk reduction and resilience, as well as supporting reconciliation and respectful collaboration with Aboriginal peoples.

About the artist

Maddi Moser is an Aboriginal artist, designer and secondary school teacher. Maddi is a proud First Nations person and is a member of Taungurung Mob in Victoria, whose ancestral Country encompasses Seymour and Broadford along the Goulburn River. Taungurung is part of the Kulin Nations (Melbourne).

Maddi currently works as a teacher and runs her own design and photography business. She currently resides in Townsville but has lived the majority of her life on the NSW/VIC border, and has close ties to the Murray River and waterways from this experience and due to her connection with her mob. Water is a theme often reflected on in her artwork.

Maddie uses her background in design to create art in a modern and unique style that helps to continue and celebrate her cultural heritage. These skills help her to create detailed traditional and digital artworks using mixed media.
